MD5SUM files contain MD5 checksums of archive files. The companion MD5SUM.asc file contains the original MD5SUM file contents and an embedded digital signature produced by PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). Verify the authenticity of the latter with "pgp MD5SUM.asc", or "gpg MD5SUM.asc", and then use md5sum (part of the GNU coreutils package, ftp://ftp.gnu.org/pub/gnu/coreutils ) to compute the checksum of any downloaded file, and compare with the value in the MD5SUM copy from PGP. This check can detect transmission errors, and tampering or modification of the archive files since the MD5SUM.asc file was created.
Most top-level directories contain small binary detached digital signature (.sig) files that can, and should, be used to verify the authenticity of their base files. See http://www.math.utah.edu/~beebe/PGP-notes.html for further information on creation and use of digital signatures.
