This machine complements the DEC-20/60 (SCIENCE.UTAH.EDU), which is the master repository for most of our public software. Operating hours are 24 hr/day 7 days/week, with preventative maintenance scheduled about once every 8 weeks, but with no set time for it. This file should point you to things of possible interest. Most files on this system are publicly readable. Our disk structures are PS: (many users + system) and APS: (scratch space). PS: is subdivided into LIB: (software), PUB: (users), and OPR: (staff). Most ANONYMOUS FTP distribution directories will reside on LIB1: (part of APS:). Directories from which we expect ANONYMOUS FTP transfers to be made will usually have a 00README.TXT file telling you about the files. The LIB1:[*] directories below contain only files with extensions .BCK, .LIS, and .CMP (see below); you have to unbundle them to get at the 00README.TXT files. LIB:[TEX.CM] -- TeX fonts (created with mode=imagen; suitable for Canon LBP-CX engine (Apple LaserWriter, Imagen 8/300, HP LaserJet and LaserJet Plus, ...) LIB1:[TEX.CM] -- TeX fonts in single BACKUP saveset LIB1:[TEX.DVI] -- TeX DVI driver family (source, documentation, executables) LIB1:[TEX.PUB.BIBTEX] -- C version of BibTeX plus Web version of BibTeX 0.99c LIB1:[TEX.PUB.COMPRESS] -- compress/decompress utilities LIB1:[TEX.PUB.INFO]-- Utilities for converting documentation to EMACS INFO format LIB1:[TEX.PUB.MAKEINDEX]-- Portable implementation of MakeIndex system LIB1:[TEX.PUB.MAKE]-- Unix-like MAKE for 6 different operating systems. Caveat: For binary files (extensions .BCK, .CMP, .EXE, .PK, .TFM, .DVI), remember to tell your FTP that beforehand; otherwise it will bring them across as text files with line separators, totally destroying them. With Wollongong FTP on VMS, the commands "tenex" or "binary" before "get foo.xxx" suffice. For CMU/Tektronix FTP, "get/type=image foo.xxx" will do it. With version 6.3 of the latter (May 1988), and if you have that version too, you can use "set structure page" to transfer any VMS file without problems; VMS record attributes will be completely preserved, and the reblocking nonsense described below would be unnecessary. We use the fine Kellerman and Smith VMS TeX implementation here, which is commercially supported at a modest price; that means that the .CH (Web change files), .CLD (command language description files), and TeXware .EXE files produced from the change files are part of that proprietary implementation. Even though these files must be publicly readable, they must NOT be exported from this machine. The BACKUP savesets described below carefully avoid inclusion of any proprietary software, and you are welcome to have them and redistribute them. The one WEB change file that does not come from Kellerman and Smith is that for BibTeX 0.99c, and consequently, that version of BibTeX is freely available. Distribution directories, such as the [TEX.*] directories noted above, have been carefully created to preserve author and time stamp attributes of their files; file time stamps are the primary record of changes. Look first for a BACKUP saveset with extension .BCK; if one exists, get it first (in binary mode), then get any files in the directory which are newer. The file 00TDIR.LST will contain a reverse time-ordered directory listing to assist in this. Each .BCK file will have a corresponding .LIS file which lists its contents (made by BACKUP /LIST=foo.lis foo.bck/SAVE). Because BACKUP refuses to read/write savesets with a blocksize of 512 bytes, it is necessary to reblock them to make them available for FTP transfer. The files REBLOCK.* in the ANONYMOUS login directory should be retrieved to do this. When you have retrieved a .BCK file, you should type $ RUN REBLOCK New blocksize: 32256 Filename: foo.bck to restore the original saveset blocksize. These BACKUP saveset are created by $ BACKUP dev:[foo...] foo.bck/SAVE $ BACKUP /LIST=foo.lis foo.bck/SAVE $ RUN REBLOCK New blocksize: 512 Filename: foo.bck and may be restored accordingly. Note that the directory tree recorded in the saveset may be different than the directory you retrieved it from. If you find in addition to a .BCK file, a corresponding file with extension .CMP, that is made by a VMS adaptation of the Unix compress utility. To reduce FTP transfer time, you may prefer to retrieve the .CMP file and then run decompress locally. The compression is done (slowly) by $ COMPRESS foo.bck foo.cmp and the decompression is done by $ DECOMPRESS foo.cmp foo.bck Executables for these two are in the ANONYMOUS login directory, with sources in LIB1:[TEX.PUB.COMPRESS]. Foreign command symbols are needed to allow them to run: $ COMPRESS :== $dev:[dir]compress.exe $ DECOMPRESS :== $dev:[dir]decompress.exe LIB1:[TEX.PUB.INFO]*.C are C programs which can convert both .ULP and VMS HELP file formats to INFO format, making this available to non-TOPS-20 sites as well. Make sure you get all the files in that directory (there are Makefile's for Unix and MS-DOS and some test files). We have moved the entire VMS HELP library to INFO format with the help of this utility. The file PUB:[ANONYMOUS]00VMSSETUP.TXT shows our local VAX VMS TeX configuration (logical names, file tree, naming conventions) on CTRSCI with the Kellerman & Smith Imprint driver and TeX implementation. The file PUB:[ANONYMOUS]00TOPS20.TXT shows our TOPS-20 TeX configuration. The file PUB:[ANONYMOUS]00PCDOS.TXT shows an IBM PC DOS TeX configuration. The DVI drivers reference a library [--]unixclib.olb for which a DVI Makefile target did not exist. To create it, do LIBRARY/create [--]unixclib.olb keybrd.obj,vaxvms.obj in the DVI directory. The Makefile has since been updated for this. Report problems, questions, et al by EMAIL to: BEEBE@SCIENCE.UTAH.EDU. Tel: (801) 581-5254
