%%%                        one-day symposium of by invitation-only

%%%                        what was presented there.

                 their IC markets. The foundry industry lowers entry
                 barriers and reduces the financial burdens, thereby
                 allowing product companies to focus all of their

                 designs. The foundry industry is also a driver of two
                 major trends in the today's semiconductor marketplace.
                 It is enabling much of the dis-integration of the
                 industry while, along with independent library and IP
                 vendors, is driving the emergence of System-On-a-Chip
                 (SOC) design.\par

                 The IC foundry business model provides semiconductor
                 companies and designers with technology, wafer capacity
                 and service. The objective is to meet the manufacturing
                 needs of multiple customers, with a level of technology
                 and service that is better than the customers could
                 achieve through their own fabs. In this role, it is
                 incumbent upon today's foundry to offer not only
                 leading edge technology, but also needs to a very broad

                 family named Crusoe. Crusoe in unique in that it is the
                 first microprocessor whose instruction set is
                 implemented entirely with software. Software
                 dynamically translates any x86 software to an
                 underlying VLIW processor that contains special
                 hardware support for dynamic translation. The result is
                 a processor that is fully compatible with all x86
                 software, has high performance, but uses very low power
                 consumption (about 1 watt). The first two Crusoe
                 processors are the 400 MHz TM3120 for mobile Internet
                 devices using Mobile Linux, and the 700 MHz TM5400 for
                 traditional notebook computers running Windows. A new
                 power management mode called LongRun will be discussed,
                 that can dynamically adjust the processor frequency and
                 voltage on the fly to minimize power consumption for
                 mobile computer systems.",

                 for non-intrusive, real-time visibility and access to

                 An industry wide effort to address these issues has
                 been evolving over the past 2 years in the form of the
                 IEEE-ISTO Nexus Forum 5001 consortium. Several
                 implementations of this proposed industry standard are
                 emerging as new products are introduced. To address the
                 needs of the wireless and cellular community,
                 Motorola's M-CORE Technology Center has developed a
                 Nexus Class 3 solution for use with the M3 family of
                 micro-RISC processors.\par

                 This paper describes the specifics of a Class 3
                 implementation as it relates to version 1.0 of the
                 standard. An overview of a cellular handset baseband
                 transceiver will further illustrate the need and
                 advantages of real-time debugging. Working silicon
                 coupled to an integrated development environment will

                 receiver can recover transmitted symbol from the

                 estimators estimate symbol time and frequency o\_set
                 using sample data over 32 symbols times without
                 transmitted symbol information, respectively, and
                 internal RAM is used for received phase delay over
                 estimation time. The receiver is implemented using
                 about 92,000 gates of Samsung KG75 SOG library, which
                 uses 0.65$\mu$m CMOS technology. The chip test result
                 shows that the receiver operates at 40 MHz clock rate
                 on 5.6V, which is equivalent to the 40Mbps data rate.",

                 on any processor without constraints. To accelerate
                 multimedia-specific applications, the architecture of
                 this processor has several features. Its merges the
                 features of RISC and DSP, its instruction set is
                 extended to accelerate both video and audio
                 applications, and it supports efficient embedded memory
                 system to reduce both bandwidth and latency for
                 multimedia applications with frequent memory
                 accesses.\par

                 This chip is now been developing with 0.25um CMOS
                 standard cell technology, and will be fabricated around
                 July, 2000. At 80MHz operating frequency, it can
                 process H.263 video coding at CIF 15frames/sec and
                 G.723.1 audio coding with 84\% processing allocation.",

  abstract =     "We developed an on-chip four-way multiprocessor, MP98
                 version 1, code-named Merlot. It is fabricated with a
                 0.15 $\mu$m process and has a die size of 110 mm2.
                 Merlot is a high performance embedded processor for
                 intelligent appliances. We extract a higher degree of
                 parallelism with low voltage operation. In our
                 presentation, we describe our multi-threading model.
                 Then, we explain Merlot's pipeline architecture,
                 focusing on fast thread creation and memory renaming.
                 We also describe our on-chip SDRAM interface which has
                 a throughput greater than 1 GB/sec and cache miss
                 penalty less than 100 ns. Finally, we show a
                 performance estimation for speech recognition and MPEG2
                 code, power dissipation, and average memory latency.
                 Restructured speech recognition code was compiled with
                 directives, and IPC of 2.72 is estimated.",

                 LSI switch chip for a Local Area System Network (LASN),
                 called RHiNET-1/SW, is presented. The LASN is a new
                 class of network which enables high performance
                 parallel processing by connecting PCs and WSs
                 distributed on one or more floors of a building. It
                 provides low latency reliable communication comparable
                 to a SAN (System Area Network) as well as relatively
                 free topology design and longer length of links
                 comparable to a LAN (LocalArea Network). RHiNET-1/SW is
                 a one-chip eight port CMOS embedded array switch with
                 external SRAM. Each port has a 133 MBytes/sec bandwidth
                 in each direction, and the chip has 1.04 GBytes/sec
                 aggregate throughput. By using a large amount of memory
                 inside and outside the chip, RHiNET-1/SW chips form a
                 low latency, free topology network with reliable
                 communication and a large bi-section bandwidth.",

                 2-way integer pipeline and a 2-way floating/media
                 pipeline. Each floating pipeline and media pipeline has
                 2-parallel and 4-parallel SIMD mechanisms,
                 respectively. The data cache equips a non-blocking
                 control and a dual load mechanism with 16KB and 4-way
                 set associative. Even if all circuit blocks were
                 developed using logic synthesis, the processor achieves
                 an operating frequency of 350MHz. About 50\% of clock
                 net power consumption is reduced with clock gating.
                 6.7M transistors are integrated in a square of 7.5
                 mm.",
