  abstract =     "The year 2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the
                 discovery of cosmic radiation by the Austrian physicist
                 Victor Franz Hess (1883--1964), obtained onboard manned
                 balloons, one of them launched up to an altitude of 5.3
                 km. His discovery earned him the Nobel Prize in 1936.
                 The discovery follows in the context of the
                 investigation of atmospheric electricity and of the
                 newly discovered radioactivity, in particular with
                 respect to rays. Starting from simple ionization
                 chambers, the instruments were developed during an
                 interplay between functional requirements, scientific
                 progress and available manufacturing
                 technologies.\par

                 The authors of this contribution take this anniversary
                 as an opportunity to describe the instrumentation used
                 by Hess, as well as further developments in the
                 instrumentation which took place in the decades
                 following Hess' discovery. This manuscript also
                 discusses details of the company who manufactured Hess'
                 instrument, ``G{\"u}nther & Tegetmeyer'' based in
                 Braunschweig, Germany. This company did not only build
                 instruments for Hess and the research on cosmic rays,
                 but also for other scientific disciplines and for
                 well-known researchers and discoverers.",

  abstract =     "Many scientists in the fin de si{\`e}cle era saw a
                 need to coordinate and unify the increasing amount of
                 data relating the physical conditions of the Earth and
                 the Sun; or more generally to establish a synthetic
                 perspective that covered the earth sciences in relation
                 to the new astrophysical sciences. Promoted under the
                 label ``cosmical physics'', the unifying
                 solar--terrestrial perspective was in vogue for a
                 decade or two. Perhaps more than any other scientist in
                 the period, the versatile Swedish chemist and physicist
                 Svante Arrhenius represented the aims of cosmical
                 physics. A central problem in the new and ambitious
                 research programme was to understand the origin and
                 nature of the aurora, and to relate it to other
                 celestial phenomena such as the solar corona and the
                 tails of comets. In 1900 Arrhenius proposed a unified
                 explanation of these and other phenomena based on the
                 Sun's radiation pressure. The theory was widely
                 discussed, praised as well as criticized. Arrhenius was
                 not only a key scientist in the short-lived tradition
                 of cosmical physics, but also influential as a popular
                 writer and powerful member of the Nobel Committee for
                 Physics. His work illustrates an approach to the earth
                 and space sciences characteristic of the fin de
                 si{\`e}cle period.",

  abstract =     "Although speculative ideas of an expanding Earth can
                 be found before World War II, it was only in the 1950s
                 and 1960s that the theory attracted serious attention
                 among a minority of earth scientists. While some of the
                 proponents of the expanding Earth adopted an empiricist
                 attitude by disregarding the physical cause of the
                 assumed expansion, others argued that the cause, either
                 fully or in part, was of cosmological origin. They
                 referred to the possibility that the gravitational
                 constant was slowly decreasing in time, as first
                 suggested by P. Dirac in 1937. As a result of a
                 stronger gravitation in the past, the ancient Earth
                 would have been smaller than today. The gravitational
                 argument for an expanding Earth was proposed by P.
                 Jordan and L. Egyed in the 1950s and during the next 2
                 decades it was discussed by several physicists,
                 astronomers and earth scientists. Among those who for a
                 period felt attracted by ``gravitational expansionism''
                 were A. Holmes, J. Tuzo Wilson and F. Hoyle. The paper
                 examines the idea of a varying gravitational constant
                 and its impact on geophysics in the period from about
                 1955 to the mid-1970s.",

                 physics at the turn of the 19--20th century in many
                 ways. We first summarize the life of these exceptional
                 scientists. Then --- owing to the topic of this journal
                 --- we focus on their atmospheric electricity research.
                 With their experiments, careful evaluations and
                 ingenious interpretation, Elster and Geitel made
                 important contributions to precipitation electricity,
                 the influence of solar radiation on the electric state
                 of the atmosphere, the nature of charge carriers and
                 the ionization of air by radioactivity. They proved
                 their experimental skills by inventing new instruments
                 with unprecedented accuracy and reliability. A very
                 modern concept was their attitude to undertake
                 long-term measurements at various locations. A section
                 on their recognition in the physics community and their
                 scientific distinctions concludes the paper.",

  abstract =     "The astronomer Manuel Johnson, a future President of
                 the Royal Astronomical Society, recorded the ocean
                 tides with his own instrument at St. Helena in
                 1826--1827, while waiting for an observatory to be
                 built. It is an important record in the history of
                 tidal science, as the only previous measurements at St.
                 Helena had been those made by Nevil Maskelyne in 1761,
                 and there were to be no other systematic measurements
                 until the late 20th century. Johnson's tide gauge, of a
                 curious but unique design, recorded efficiently the
                 height of every tidal high and low water for at least
                 13 months, in spite of requiring frequent re-setting.
                 These heights compare very reasonably with a modern
                 tidal synthesis based on present-day tide gauge
                 measurements from the same site. Johnson's method of
                 timing is unknown, but his calculations of lunar phases
                 suggest that his tidal measurements were recorded in
                 Local Apparent Time. Unfortunately, the recorded times
                 are found to be seriously and variably lagged by many
                 minutes. Johnson's data have never been fully
                 published, but his manuscripts have been safely
                 archived and are available for inspection at Cambridge
                 University. His data have been converted to computer
                 files as part of this study for the benefit of future
                 researchers.",

  abstract =     "The book presents a state-of-the-art summary of
                 knowledge on the use of radionuclides to study
                 processes and systems in the continental part of the
                 Earth's environment. It is conceived as a companion to
                 the two volumes of this series, which deal with
                 isotopes as tracers in the marine environment
                 (Livingston, Marine Radioactivity) and with the
                 radioecology of natural and man-made terrestrial
                 systems (Shaw, Radioactivity in Terrestrial
                 Ecosystems). Although the book focuses on natural and
                 anthropogenic radionuclides (radioactive isotopes), it
                 also refers to stable environmental isotopes, which in
                 a variety of applications, especially in hydrology and
                 climatology, have to be consulted to evaluate
                 radionuclide measurements in terms of the ages of
                 groundwater and climate archives, respectively. The
                 basic principles underlying the various applications of
                 natural and anthropogenic radionuclides in
                 environmental studies are described in the first part
                 of the book. The book covers the two major groups of
                 applications: the use of radionuclides as tracers for
                 studying transport and mixing processes: and as time
                 markers to address problems of the dynamics of such
                 systems, manifested commonly as the so-called residence
                 time in these systems. The applications range from
                 atmospheric pollution studies, via water resource
                 assessments to contributions to global climate change
                 investigation. The third part of the book addresses new
                 challenges in the development of new methodological
                 approaches, including analytical methods and fields of
                 applications.",

  abstract =     "This biography summarizes the seminal contributions to
                 auroral and space science of Carl St{\o}rmer
                 (1874--1957). He was the first to develop precise
                 photographic methods to calculate heights and
                 morphologies of diverse auroral forms during four solar
                 cycles. St{\o}rmer independently devised numerical
                 techniques to determine the trajectories of high-energy
                 charged particles allowed and forbidden in the Earth's
                 magnetic field. His theoretical analyses explained
                 cosmic ray access to the upper atmosphere, 20 years
                 before they were identified by other scientists.
                 St{\o}rmer's crowning achievement, ``The Polar
                 Aurora,`` published when he was 81 years old, stands to
                 this day as a regularly cited guide in graduate-level
                 courses on space physics. The authors present the life
                 of this prodigious scientist in relation to the
                 cultural life of early 20th century in Norway and to
                 the development of the space sciences in the
                 post-Sputnik era.",

                 beginning of systematically investigating the Earth and
                 its changes. Celsius may be characterized as a pioneer

                 observations and by collecting long series of numerical
                 data. In the early 1700s he and his assistants measured
                 and studied latitude, longitude, gravity, magnetism,
                 sea level change, land uplift, air pressure,
                 temperature and northern lights. Much of Celsius'
                 inspiration for his works came from his participation
                 in an international expedition to the Arctic Circle,
                 the purpose of which was nothing less than trying to
                 confirm the theories of Newton. In many respects
                 Celsius concentrated on utilizing Sweden's northerly
                 position on the Earth, promoting such investigations
                 that could not easily be made in more southerly
                 countries. This book is the story of the life and works
                 of a man who started from meager circumstances in an
                 isolated northern university but developed into a
                 pioneering Earth scientist with international contacts.
                 It is also the story of a scientist who was engaged in
