This is a COMPLETE bibliography of publications in the quarterly journal Annals of the History of Computing (CODEN AHCOE5, ISSN 0164-1239), which began publishing with volume 1, number 1, in July 1979. The journal was published by the American Federation of Information Processing Societies (AFIPS).

Publication ceased with volume 13, number 4, in 1991, but was continued in 1992 as volume 14, number 1, of the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing (CODEN IAHCEX, ISSN 1058-6180). That journal is covered in a companion bibliography, ieeeannhistcomput.bib. The two journals have a joint Web site at

    http://www.computer.org/annals/

This bibliography also contains entries for articles published in books on the history of computing.

Metropolis and Worlton [Metropolis:1980:TEH] offer this good advice to historians:

``Remember that the basis of scientific history is bibliography. Start with a good bibliography and end with a better one.''

This bibliography was prepared by merging data from the TeX Users Group bibliography archive, the BibNet Project archive, the OCLC Contents1st database, the Compendex database, and the huge Karlsruhe computer science bibliography archive. At version 1.02, another 67 entries were added from an extensive Web page search.

At version 2.00, data from the IEEE Annals of the History of Computing Web site covering this predecessor journal completely was merged in. The journal text of more than 155 articles was checked to correct errors or to complete missing information.

During this work, several instances of missing article were uncovered in the IEEE archives; it is expected that a few more such articles remain undiscovered. The Tables of Contents for volumes 1--10 in bibliography entry Anonymous:1988:TYT were responsible for some of these discoveries. I have yet to check the contents of volumes 11--14 for further discrepancies.

Book reviews in this journal are often detailed and lengthy. In some cases, they have been included twice, once in a collected entry, and once with the individual review. Similar remarks apply to the Comments and Biographies entries.

Books that received only cursory mention in reviews (often listed in a section ``Capsule Reviews'') are not listed in the bibliography entries, although, ultimately, it would be possible to extract them from the article text.

This bibliography also contains entries for books on the history of computing, and article reprints therein, and for all of the articles and books listed in review titles, since they too record part of the history of this field. Entries are often provided for multiple editions of these books.

Numerous errors in the sources noted above have been corrected. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by software developed for the BibNet Project.

In this bibliography, entries are sorted in publication order, using ``bibsort -byvolume'' within the Annals section. The review section is sorted by citation label, with ``bibsort -bylabel''.

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
