BibTeX file docstring comments

This is a COMPLETE bibliography of publications in the open access journal Frontiers in Marine Science (CODEN none, ISSN 2296-7745), published by Frontiers Media S. A., Lausanne, Switzerland. Publication began with volume 1 in 2014. However, issues are not assigned numbers or months, each article is paginated from 1, and page counts are not recorded in metadata supplied to crossref.org. That might be due to the availability of articles in multiple electronic formats.

The journal has a Web site at

    https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/655

but there appears to be no record there of volume contents, only a general search facility.

A block dump of DOI values for this journal from crossref.org found many values that could be mapped to BibTeX data. However, there were still many missing article numbers.

Journal article DOI values look like this sample:

10.3389/fmars.2019.00743

Here 10.3389 identifies the publisher (which has numerous other Frontiers in X journals), fmars identifies this journal, 2019 is a 4-digit year (which can be off-by-one from the article publication year), and 00743 is an article number that is also recorded in running page footers in article PDF files.

A solution to the metadata recovery problem has been to do DOI lookups for sequential article numbers within each year, stopping when repeated requests fail to return BibTeX entries. That identified these 15 holes in article numbering:

2014: 00001--00082: missing 5 22 2015: 00001--00128: missing 25 30 41 89 2016: 00001--00291: missing 19 91 212 2017: 00001--00441: missing 214 216 2018: 00001--00536: missing 424 2019: 00001--00827: missing 193 197 585

DOI values for this journal map to URL values with common fmars.20XX.NNNNN strings:

    https://doi.org/10.3389/fmars.2015.00116
    https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmars.2015.00116/full

All of the missing article numbers have been searched for in DOI form at crossref.org, and in URL form at the publisher site, and none has been found.

At version 1.04, the COMPLETE year coverage looked like this:

     2014 (  76)    2017 ( 441)    2020 (   7)
     2015 ( 113)    2018 ( 507)    2021 (   3)
     2016 ( 286)    2019 ( 781)

     Article:       2214

     Total entries: 2214

Errors in the sources noted above have been corrected, and protective bracing for proper names and compound author names, and markup for biological names, have been added. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by software developed for the BibNet Project.

In this bibliography, entries are sorted in DOI order, because of the lack of issue number and pages data.

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
