This is a COMPLETE bibliography of publications in the journal Japanese Studies in the History of Science (JSHS) (CODEN JSHIAE, ISSN 0090-0176). That journal is a companion to the Japanese language journal, Kagakusi Kenkyu (Journal of the History of Science, Japan), which began publishing in December 1941. JSHS was published as 18 volumes from 1962 to 1979, when it was renamed Historia Scientiarum (International Journal of the History of Science Society of Japan). That successor journal is covered in a separate bibliography, histscijpn.bib, in the TeX User Group archive. Publications in the journal are mostly in English, but about eight percent of the articles are in French or German (for which we supply title translations).

The journal has Web sites at

    http://historyofscience.jp/HS/
    http://historyofscience.jp/kankoubutsu/historiascientiarum/
    http://hssj.info/

Regrettably, journal metadata at those sites are incomplete and irregular, but the bibliographer found tables of contents in print volumes, and filled in the many holes to complete the coverage. There appear to be no assigned DOI values, and only about six percent of the entries have URLs.

In this bibliography, East Asian names in author fields are given in Western order (given name family name); personal names in titles are preserved in their publication order.

In the journal Web and print pages, family names are often indicated by uppercasing the name. That is a typographical embellishment that we intentionally do NOT preserve in this bibliography, because it contravenes widespread practice in English-language bibliographies and reference lists.

At version 1.00, the COMPLETE year coverage looked like this:

     1962 (  21)    1970 (  17)    1978 (  16)
     1963 (  10)    1971 (  16)    1979 (  13)
     1964 (  11)    1972 (  15)    1980 (   0)
     1965 (  15)    1973 (  14)    1981 (   0)
     1966 (  14)    1974 (  17)    1982 (   1)
     1967 (  12)    1975 (  15)    1983 (   0)
     1968 (  12)    1976 (  18)    1984 (   0)
     1969 (  16)    1977 (  24)    1985 (   1)

     Article:        277
     Book:             1

     Total entries:  278

Data for this bibliography have been derived from the publisher sites, from copies of the print journals, and from MathSciNet, Scopus, and zbMath data, with additions from bibliographies in the BibNet Project and TeX User Group bibliography archives.

Numerous errors in the sources noted above have been corrected. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by the biblabel software developed for the BibNet Project.

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
