The journal has Web sites at

    https://royalsocietypublishing.org/journal/rsnr
    https://royalsocietypublishing.org/loi/rsnr
    http://www.jstor.org/journal/noterecoroyasoci

The JSTOR site lags the others by a five-year moving window.

Publishing began with volume 1, number 1, in April 1938, and the journal has two issues per volume from volume 1 (1938) to volume 52 (1998), except for volumes 3 (1940), 15 (1960), and 22 (1967), with only one issue each. Volumes 53 (1999) to 61 (2007) have three issues, and volumes 62 (2008) to date have four issues. Volume 64 (2010) has one supplemental issue numbered S1 in this bibliography. From volume 51 (1997), issues have day values. Volumes sometimes cross year boundaries, and there were no volumes published during World War II in the years 1941--1945. For the Royal Society metadata, all but entry Anonymous:2002:EWR (a short errata) have DOI values; that entry is available from JSTOR. However, JSTOR supplies an additional 307 entries that are absent from the Royal Society Web site. Most of them are for journal issue front matter, back matter, indexes, and volume information (tables of contents). Those entries have URL values, but no DOI values. Entries without DOI values, but nonempty pages value, are missing from the Royal Society data, and really ought to be retrofitted with DOI assignments. They are entries with these labels:

Anonymous:1946:RCC Barlow:1959:EDF Heathcoat-Amory:1959:AD Pantin:1959:ARW deBeer:1959:SUL Anonymous:1973:BRB Anonymous:1981:ENN Cook:1996:PNE King-Hele:1996:FE Anonymous:1998:EWL Anonymous:2001:ACM Briscoe:2001:BRC Cook:2001:I Klug:2001:RSN Sainsbury:2001:OA Anonymous:2002:EWR Quinn:2004:SAC Anonymous:2008:ISC Fox:2012:EMF Anonymous:2013:Ia Anonymous:2013:Ib Anonymous:2013:Ic Anonymous:2013:Id Fox:2013:VI Anonymous:2014:Ia Anonymous:2014:Ib Anonymous:2014:Ic Anonymous:2014:Id

Royal Society metadata for book reviews is sparse, and frequently lacking the expected author / title / publisher / year / ISBN data for those books, as well as the name of the reviewer. In many cases, book metadata have therefore been extracted from the PDF files of the book review sections, and additional BibTeX entries have been created for each book review. Careful examination of article titles suggests that most book reviews have now been identified, although the journal's titling practice makes that difficult to verify without examination of at least the first page of every article. Almost 2/3 of the more than 300 book entries have table of contents data, and about 1/3 have abstracts. All of them include US Library of Congress Call Number (LCCN) values.

Publisher metadata for errata and corrigenda are similarly sparse, but the details of all of them have been supplied from article PDF files, and cross references have been generated for all such entries.

This journal is unusual, at least by modern conventions, of including academic and honorary degrees, distinguished society memberships, and noble titles in author names. Such practices have declined, but not disappeared, in later volumes.

Abbreviations of degrees and honorary or noble titles found in this bibliography include:

A.C. Companion of the Order of Australia Bart Baronet (title of nobility below baron) C.B.E. Commander of the Order of the British Empire D.B.E. Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire D.Sc. Doctor of Science Dr Doctor F.B.A. Fellow of the British Academy F.Eng. Fellow of the Fellowship of Engineering F.R.Eng. Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering F.R.S. Fellow of the Royal Society F.R.C.S. Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons F.S.A. Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London F.S.A. Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland For. Mem. R.S. Foreign Member of the Royal Society K.C.V.O. Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order Kt Knight M.A. Master of Arts M.B.E. Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire M.D. Doctor of Medicine O.B.E. Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire O.M. Order of Merit in the Commonwealth realms [limited to 24 living members] P.R.S. President of the Royal Society R.N. Royal Navy Rt Hon Right Honourable S.R.S. Secretary of the Royal Society

About 2002, the publisher began to drop dots (full stops, periods) in degrees and titles, so F.R.S. became FRS, F.R.Eng. became FREng, O.M. became OM, and so on.

Data for this bibliography have been derived from the publisher and JSTOR metadata, with contributions from the BibNet Project and TeX User Group bibliography archives, and the MathSciNet database, as well as from the catalogs of numerous major libraries around the world.

Numerous errors in the publisher sources noted above have been corrected. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by software developed for the BibNet Project.

This bibliography is sorted in publication order, with``bibsort -byvolume''.

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
