This is a COMPLETE bibliography of publications in the journal Numerische Mathematik (CODEN NUMMA7, ISSN 0029-599X (print), 0945-3245 (electronic)), which begin publishing in 1959. This file covers the years 1959--1999. The companion files nummath20xx.bib cover later decades.

There were from three to eight issues per year from 1959 to 1985, and since then, twelve per year.

The journal is published by Springer-Verlag.

At version 3.42, the year coverage looked like this:

     1959 (  24)    1974 (  45)    1989 (  95)
     1960 (  34)    1975 (  67)    1990 (  99)
     1961 (  40)    1976 (  75)    1991 (  85)

     Book:             1

     Total entries: 2913

Despite its German title, most of the articles in this journal are in English; only 85 (3%) are in French (including, curiously, one whose title is in English!), and 310 (11%) are in German. English translations are supplied for all of the French and German titles.

Cross-references are supplied for all corrigenda and errata, so that citing one will automatically provide citations of the others.

The journal has a gopher site at

with tables of contents for 1993--1997, and a World Wide Web site at

Currently paid-up journal subscribers can obtain access to the full-text electronic edition of the journal in PDF and compressed PostScript formats. For details, visit the World Wide Web site

Beginning with Volume 67 Number 1 (1994), URLs pointing to abstracts are included with each entry. Their names are constructed systematically from the volume, number, initial page, and year, so that they can be, and have been, generated automatically by software. However, the publisher's Web site is about a year behind the journal, so not all of the URLs given below are reachable yet. The abstract pages contain further links to the full text which are accessible to qualified subscribers, as noted above.

This journal is unusual in that some volumes span two years, some issues are assigned two consecutive issue numbers, and no months were clearly associated with issue numbers until volume 35, number 1, in 1980. [Actually, there WAS a tiny day/month stamp at the bottom of the covers for volumes 14--34, but this bibliography does not yet incorporate that information.] Citations in the journal to papers in the journal normally just give volume, pages, and year data. Volumes 1--13 (1959--1969) had no assigned issue numbers at all, just a volume number.

And now for a historical note: Twenty-four of these articles were pre-publications in Numerische Mathematik during the years 1965--1970 of all but five of the chapters of the famous book edited by Wilkinson and Reinsch in 1971, the ``Handbook of Automatic Computation, Volume II, Linear Algebra'', often known as HACLA, or just ``the yellow book''.

This may have been the first serious attempt to publish high-quality working numerical software. Although the publication language chosen was Algol 60, the algorithms, sometimes with improvements, were later incorporated as Fortran subroutines in the even-more famous EISPACK (1976) and LINPACK (1979) libraries, and those in turn were merged into the highly-developed LAPACK system, which is available in Fortran and C, and later, the LAPACK++ system in C++.

Cross-references to the HACLA book are provided for all those twenty-four articles in the bibliography below.

The great success of this software publication certainly provided evidence of the value of such work, and in 1975, the journal ACM Transactions on Mathematical Software was formed to carry on the tradition of HACLA, and the ACM Algorithm collection. A total of 792 high-quality algorithms have been published this way by Spring 1999.

The initial draft of entries for 1990--1996 was derived from the OCLC Contents1st database. Additions were then made from all of the bibliographies in the TeX User Group collection, from bibliographies in the author's personal files, from the Compendex databases (1980--1999), from the IEEE INSPEC database (1970--1997), from the MathSciNet database, from the European Mathematical Society (Zentrallblat fuer Mathematik) database, and from the computer science bibliography collection at ftp://ftp.ira.uka.de/pub/bibliography to which many people have contributed.

Numerous errors in the sources noted above have been corrected. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by software developed for the BibNet Project.

In this bibliography, entries are sorted in publication order within each journal, using bibsort -bypages.

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
