This is a still incomplete bibliography of the journal Physis: Rivista Internazionale di Storia della Scienza [International Journal of the History of Science] (CODEN PYSSA3, ISSN 0031-9414 (print), 2038-6265 (electronic)). The journal is published by Casa Editrice Leo S. Olschki (Firenze, Italia).

The name Physis comes from Latin and Greek, with the meaning `Nature'.

The journal should not be confused with several others named Physis published in Argentina (ISSN 0325-0342), Brazil (ISSN 0103-7331 (print), 1809-4481 (electronic)), Germany (no ISSN), and Greece (no ISSN). Consequently, if its full name is abbreviated in citations, it should be to `Physis Riv. Int. Stor. Sci.', not just to `Physis'.

Publication began with volume 1, number 1, in 1959, and there are usually two to four issues per annual volume. Publication was suspended from 1986 to 1990, and when it resumed in 1991, the journal was renamed with the suffix Nuova Serie (New Series), but with the CODEN and ISSN unchanged. Volumes 48 (2011--2012) and 49 (2013--2014) span two years.

Although the journal name is Italian, just under half the articles recorded here are in English (331), with the rest in French (39), German (18), Italian (311), or Spanish (4). English translations are provided for those titles, and translations are supplied in keywords values for Latin phrases in article titles.

In 2015, links from that second site to issue contents for 2007--2012 do not resolve. However, experiments show that some can be repaired by a simple string substitution, and as a result, these URLs have been successfully retrieved:

They are one-page issue contents summaries, without page-number data. Attempts to fetch similar URLs for 1991--2005 are unsuccessful.

Some of the Web sources have confusion over the relations between page numbers, volume numbers, and years, with a different year sometimes attached to a pages or volume value. That cannot be resolved until journal page images or physical printed volumes are available to the bibliographer.

There appear to be few metadata for Physis at the publisher Web site, so this bibliography has been constructed by merging data from occasional PDF files of issue contents, plus several secondary sources, including the MathSciNet database, the zbMATH database, the JSTOR database, the PubMed database, the Scopus database, the Web of Science database, brief snippets from the Google Books index of volumes 1--27 (1959--1985), assorted author publication lists, the ``Current Bibliography of the History of Science and Its Cultural Influences, 2010'' (Isis, 101(S1) xxx + 327), bibliographies in the BibNet Project and TeX User Group archives, and Web searches for references to articles in Physis and preprints or reprints thereof. The largest coverage found in any single source is MathSciNet, which has only 27 percent of the articles recorded here; the next largest is zbMATH, which covers only 21 percent. Thus, data collection for this bibliography has proved particularly challenging and required thousands of Web searches. Sadly, several of the databases uppercase author names and/or article titles, or translate non-English titles to English without preserving the original title, or omit non-English titles altogether. Work is in progress to identify further sources of reliable metadata for Physis.

All detected errors in the Web sources noted above have been corrected, and large numbers of lost accents on French, German, Italian, and Spanish words have been restored. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by the biblabel software developed for the BibNet Project.

In this bibliography, entries are sorted in publication order, with the help of ``bibsort -bypages''. The bibsort utility, and several related programs for bibliography maintenance, is available at ftp://ftp.math.utah.edu/pub/bibsort, and at other Internet sites which mirror it, including the Comprehensive TeX Archive Network (CTAN).

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
