BibTeX file docstring comments

This is a bibliography of the magazine/ journal Scientific American (CODEN SCAMAC, ISSN 0036-8733 (print), 1946-7087 (electronic)) for the decade 1850--1859.

The companion bibliographies sciam18xx.bib, sciam19xx.bib and sciam20xx.bib cover other decades.

At version 1.00, the year coverage looked like this: There is no coverage of the Arabic edition (Majallat Al-Oloom), the Chinese edition, the French edition (Pour La Science, l'Edition Francaise de Scientific American), the German translation (Spektrum der Wissenschaft), the Italian edition (Le Scienze), the Japanese edition (Saiensonu), the Polish edition (Swiat Nauki), the Russian edition (V mire nauki), or the Spanish edition (Investigacion Ciencia), and it is not known whether adequate online data exist for those editions that could be converted to BibTeX form.

The journal has a World-Wide Web site at

http://www.sciam.com/

with pointers to incomplete indexes of issues from 1996--date at

http://www.sciam.com/previousissues.html

In some cases, these indexes have pointers to the full text of selected articles. URL values in the bibliography entries below contain pointers to these indexes and/or articles.

There is also a searchable archive of issues from 1993 to date, available for download, in PDF form, for a fee:

https://www.sciamarchive.com/

Sadly, the sciam.com publication data proved unreliable because titles in tables of contents frequently did not match those on the articles, and other publication data were often incomplete or inaccurate.

Fortunately, there is now a good archive of journal data at

http://www.nature.com/scientificamerican

and those data have been converted automatically to BibTeX form for this bibliography, with additional programmed and manual work to supply the required bracing of proper nouns in title fields, and compound names in author fields, and to repair other typographical errors.

Data for this bibliography have been derived primarily from the nature.com Web site.

Numerous errors in the sources noted above have been corrected. Spelling has been verified with the UNIX spell and GNU ispell programs using the exception dictionary stored in the companion file with extension .sok.

BibTeX citation tags are uniformly chosen as name:year:abbrev, where name is the family name of the first author or editor, year is a 4-digit number, and abbrev is a 3-letter condensation of important title words. Citation tags were automatically generated by software developed for the BibNet Project.

In this bibliography, entries are sorted in publication order within each journal, using bibsort -byvolume.

The checksum field above contains a CRC-16 checksum as the first value, followed by the equivalent of the standard UNIX wc (word count) utility output of lines, words, and characters. This is produced by Robert Solovay's checksum utility.
