TUG Technical Working Group on a TeX Directory Structure (WG-94-07)

The primary purpose of this Technical Working Group (TWG) is to develop a document that describes a standard TeX Directory Structure (TDS): a directory hierarchy for macros, fonts, and the other implementation-independent TeX system files. As a matter of practicality, we also suggests ways to incorporate the rest of the TeX files into a single structure. The TDS has been designed to work on all modern operating systems. We hope that administrators and developers of both free and commercial TeX implementations will adopt this standard.

The TWG-TDS was established in May 1994, following some early discussions on a TeX CD-ROM project. In June 1995 a first draft standard (0.98) was released for public review. A second draft standard (0.999) was released in November 1995 and subsequently published in TUGboat 16#4. The lastest `draft' is version 0.9994 released in July 1997. We hope to release a `final' version 1.0 soon.
