Getting Started with TeX and LaTeX

This page of "good starters" is compiled for the benefit of new users. The section with Pointers to ... gives an overall picture of the system and its resources. Installing TeX and LaTeX addresses the installation procedure. The remaining sections offer suggestions for basic readings, tutorials and compuscripts.

  * Installing TeX and LaTeX

If you need to install TeX, LaTeX and related systems by yourself, get TeX Live CD! A free copy of TeX Live CD is available to the members of TeX Users Group. You can also contact your local TeX User Group for more information.

The TeX Live CD offers complete TeX system for Unix and Windows 95/Windows NT and an extensive collection of documents. In the top directory you will find README file(s) and an install script, which makes the installation to be a simple task. And with TeX Live Guide by your side your task will be even easier.

  * TeX Catalogue Online

Graham Williams' The TeX Catalogue Online lists more than 1000 TeX, LaTeX, and related packages and tools, and provides links to the sources and documentation.

Often an immediate reason for starting with TeX/LaTeX is a publication of a paper. If the publisher sends instructions asking for a specific style, you should ask them for a ready-made style package! Here are the examples of some of these:
