This directory contains all of the files in the Unix TeX distribution from the University of Washington from a tape written March 9, 1989. It has been split into several pieces for the convenience of people who know they need only part of it, but anyone who redistributes these files should copy all of them. The entire distribution requires about 20 megabytes in compressed form, 30 megabytes uncompressed. The components of the distribution are: compress - from Usenet undump - from Usenet tex82 - the TeX82 distribution including METAFONT, LaTeX and BibTeX babel - the start of some foreign language stuff DVIware - The collection of drivers that used to be TeXdevices utilityfonts - mf source for various METAFONT operations cmfonts - mf source, tfms, and a basic set in pk format LaTeXfonts - the same for the special LaTeX and SliTeX fonts amsfonts - Cyrillic and new math symbols from the American Mathematical Society, compiled with old Metafont and converted to pk format. Also pk files, tfm files for the Euler fonts. For a list of the files in each of these components, look in the file COPYING.POLICY. Note that the font distributions now include only PK fonts, not GF fonts. The program "pktogf" (in the tex82 files) can be used to convert these if you need GF fonts, or you can use Metafont to create GF files from the CM sources. Each component is stored as a compressed tar file, split into 512K byte pieces to make file transfer easier. If you are using the Unix "ftp" program to transfer the files, be sure to select "binary" mode. Once you have copied all of the pieces of a component, for instance "cmfonts", the following command should be used to unpack it: cat cmfonts.tar.Z.* | zcat | tar xf - The program "zcat" is part of the compress distribution, which is provided in the file compress.tar in case your system does not already have it. The above command will restore everything into your current directory, so be sure to execute it in the directory where you want the files to be. Each of the components includes the following files: ./NO_WARRANTY ./README.tex82 ./tex82/COPYING.POLICY ./tex82/README ./tex82/README.SCORE These provide important information about the status of the TeX distribution.
