abstract = "The ancient Greek astronomical calculator known as the
Antikythera Mechanism has been analyzed using
                 geometrical, calculus, trigonometric and complex
variable methods. This analysis demonstrates that the
Mechanism modeled the variations in the Moon's angular
velocity as seen from the Earth, to better than 1 part
in 200. A major implication of this analysis is that
the Antikythera Mechanism of the 2nd century BCE
modeled the anomalistic motion of the Moon more
accurately than Ptolemy's account of Hipparchus's
theory of the 2nd century CE. In the present work,
mathematics, astronomy, history and methodology of the
sciences combine in the study of a unique artifact,
preserved for posterity in an ancient ship that sank in
the Mediterranean 2100 years ago and recovered by Greek

W., Edmunds, M. G. Decoding the Antikythera mechanism:
investigation of an ancient astronomical calculator.
                 Nature 444 (7119), 587 591, 2006] reveals some
elements, which could help to decode its function and
use. The Back Door Inscription seems to give a detailed
description of some external parts of the instrument
and the related instructions for their use. We
especially refer to the term `ecliptic' as compared to
that in Ars Eudoxi and other papyri and inscriptions.
The Back Plate Inscription seems to give instructions
for the proper orientation and use of the instrument.
The Front Door Inscription refers to the stationary
points of planetary motion, but only two planetary
names have been read, that of Venus and Mercury, as far
as we know. After a study of the works of Alexandrian
scholars Ptolemy, Theon, Paulus and Heliodorus
regarding the stationary points of planetary motion, we
arrive at the following conclusion: it seems very
likely that the Antikythera Mechanism has been
constructed apart from other uses (a) for the
observation of the Sun, the Moon and the stars; (b) to
simulate the longitudinal motion of the Sun, the Moon
and the planets, and (c) in the case of Mercury and
Venus the instrument could also show their stationary
points and the retrograde arc between them; here we
present additional arguments to support the view that
this is also true for the three outer planets. As far
as the technical knowledge underlying the construction
of Mechanism's gear trains is concerned, the last
(eighth) book of Pappus's Collection, includes the
basic notions and theorems for such constructions,
known from the earlier works of Archimedes.",

abstract = "The Greek astronomic calculator, discovered in the
depth of the sea in a naval wreckage of the 1st century
B.C. in front of the island of Antikythera, is the most
amazing among the archaeological discoveries of last
century. The mechanism immediately appeared like a
device out of its time. After years of study this
devise is still provoking a discussion between
scientists and archaeologists because of the complexity
and the modernity of the scientific knowledge the work
presupposes. Its epicyclical gearings show the high
level of the scientific culture reached in that period
of history. The knowledge of the planetary motion,
necessary to the design of the epicyclic gearing of the
Calculator of Antikythera, presumes that ancient Greek
scientists knew the planetary motion of the celestial
bodies and had already achieved the same results that
have been attributed to scientists 19 centuries later.
The scientific value of this gear mechanism is
indisputable because the inventor of the Calculator of
Antikythera had the knowledge that was re-discovered
centuries later as the heliocentric theory proposed by
Niccol{\`o} Copernicus in 1543 (De revolutionibus
orbium coelestium), the universal gravitation law
formulated by Isaac Newton in 1687 (Philosophiae
Naturalis Principia Mathematica), and the kinematic
study of the epicyclical gearings published by Robert
Willis in 1841 (Principles of mechanism).",

advanced Greek computer of around 150 100B.C., was
found in 1900. In the almost 110years since his
recovery, the Mechanism has been largely investigated.
It is now known that 30 gears have survived and that
others are still missing. The construction of a working
model of the Antikythera Mechanism would serve to
investigate the accuracy of its predictions. Such a
construction would though need determination with high
precision of the geometrical characteristics of its
gears. In this paper the geometrical dimensions of the
gears needed for an operational model of the
                 Antikythera Mechanism are being investigated.",

abstract = "I present some insights into Hanny's Voorwerp and the
                 Antikythera mechanism --- contrasting their
similarities and differences. They are both excellent
examples of serendipitous discoveries in which human
curiosity and perseverance have played an important
role. Both objects have captured the imagination of the
general public, and their discovery was only made
possible via the introduction of new technologies. One
major difference is that there is only one Antikythera
device but there are now many Voorwerpen or
``voorwerpjes'', as they are more commonly known. The
study of a collection of objects, as is common in
astronomy, greatly aids our understanding of cosmic
phenomena. In the case of the voorwepjes, we now know
that such systems are to be identified with obscured
galaxies or Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) that appear to
have recently and indeed rapidly turned off. Clearly,
the discovery of more examples of devices similar to
the Antikythera mechanism would have a significant
affect in advancing our understanding of this object
and the people that constructed it. Thus far, surveys
of the site of the Antikythera wreck are incomplete and
non-systematic. Like radio astronomy and other
                 progressive fields, technological advances proceed
exponentially in terms of capacity and capability.
Recent advances in diving technology are no exception
to this rule. It is almost 40 years ago that Jacques
Cousteau led the last adhoc survey of the Antikythera
wreck --- the time has surely come to revisit the site
and conduct a proper scientific and systematic survey.
The deepest areas of the site are so far completely
unexplored while it is known that some artefacts did
fall into this area during the original excavation.
During this workshop, I called for a return to the site
using the most modern diving technologies.",

abstract = "Antikythera mechanism should be the oldest
astronomical geared calculator in the world. It is
confirmed that the solar anomaly motion could display
on the front dial even though the corresponding solar
mechanism has been lost. This work focuses on the
reconstruction synthesis of the lost solar mechanism
and provides a systematic approach to generate all
feasible designs. Based on the kinematic and mechanism
analysis, the design specifications of three possible
types concluded by different input conditions are
obtained. Through a study of historical literature and
the existing design, the required design constraints
are further concluded. Then, according to the concepts
of generalization and specialization as well as the
                 manufacture consideration, four feasible designs,
including Wright's design in 2002, are respectively
synthesized for different input types. These designs
are consistent with the scientific theories and
techniques of the subject's time period and match the

abstract = "This book presents a systematic design methodology for
decoding the interior structure of the Antikythera
mechanism, an astronomical device from ancient Greece.
The historical background, surviving evidence and
reconstructions of the mechanism are introduced, and
the historical development of astronomical achievements
and various astronomical instruments are investigated.
Pursuing an approach based on the conceptual design of
modern mechanisms and bearing in mind the standards of
science and technology at the time, all feasible
designs of the six lost/incomplete/unclear subsystems
are synthesized as illustrated examples, and 48
feasible designs of the complete interior structure are
presented. This approach provides not only a logical
tool for applying modern mechanical engineering
knowledge to the reconstruction of the Antikythera
mechanism, but also an innovative research direction
for identifying the original structures of the
mechanism in the future. In short, the book offers
valuable new insights for all readers who are
                 interested in the Antikythera mechanism.",

abstract = "As it can be concluded by the researchers so far,
Antikythera mechanism was a complicated device and was
mainly used as an astronomical multi tool, predicting
the most known celestial events of that era. Due to the
corrosion, after all these years trapped in a
shipwreck, many gears of the mechanism have lost their
form and consistency or a significant number of parts
of the mechanism have been lost. So, for many years,
efforts for mechanism reconstruction have been
attempted. Simulating the mechanism is the key to
understand its function. it is very appropriate to use
a modern date computer simulation for validating the
functional description of the machine (Roumeliotis).
Moreover the development of the 3D computer graphics
software, inspired for virtual models and simulations
of mechanism. Understanding the function of the
Antikythera mechanism, in conjunction with the
astronomical indications that the constructor managed
to perform, could be the key of revealing all possible
combinations of surviving gears, or the prediction of
the missing parts. Aiming at this, a project was
started. Taking in mind the complexity of this device,
the project was divided in several parts such as: (a)
Extensive data collection in mathematical and
astronomical resources; (b) 3d modelling in
                 CINEMA4D223D modelling, animation and rendering
application developed by MAXON Computer GmbH.; (c)
Animation of the 3d model by spreading out motion
through the gears involved; (d) Intensive check,
verifying that the indicated periods of the cycles were
identical with the theoretically expected; (e)
Processing in UNITY3D33Cross platform game engine, so
the virtual model can gain its interactivity; and (f) A
flash presentation was created to highlight the
functions, features and working principle of the
                 mechanism.",

abstract = "The Antikythera Mechanism (AM) is considered by the
scientific community to be the first computer ever
built. Its operation is not entirely known, derived
only by the existing fragments of the mechanism that
have been found and studied. From the early
comprehensive study of the mechanism by Derek De Solla
Price to the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project
(AMRP), which performed the CT scans of the AM, the
input of the mechanism was assumed to be a crown gear
that was found on one of the fragments. However, all
attempts to construct an exact copy of the mechanism
found out that considerable torque should be applied to
the presumed drive crown, in ordered to operate the
mechanism. This paper tries to compute the transmission
of torque from any of the mechanism's gears to the rest
of the gear-trains, to determine the best possible
location of a driving gear or crown as the case may be.
The computation takes into account an estimated
rotation friction on each shaft that will result in
further reducing the transmitted torque in the case of
                 long gear-trains.",

abstract = "One undeniable characteristic of Antikythera mechanism
is the complex gear arrangements that generously have
been used by the constructor. He succeeded the best
combination of integer numbers to reach the maximum
accuracy, no matter the number of the gears he used for
it. One representative example is the moon train
consisted of eleven meshing gears which he used to
simulate the non-uniform lunar motion. Someone could
say that the constructor preferred the complexity for
the sake of accuracy. Many Scholars, believe that the
mechanism could be a kind of planetarium. In that case,
there is a possibility of a more complex mechanical
subsystem comprised of more imaginative and specialized
gear arrangements. The latest decoded inscriptions on
the mechanism's surfaces, are referred to planets
(Inferiors and Superiors) and show records of
astronomical events. The lack of physical evidence of
this planetary construction prevents its conception,
but on the other hand, challenges the researchers to
discover the inimitable thought of its creator.
Nevertheless, fitting this excess gearing in a limited
space of a compact construction like Antikythera
mechanism is really a puzzler. The planetary subsystem
which will complete the mechanism should stand out for
the maximum possible measurement accuracy and the best
space management. This research proposes a feasible
epicyclic gearing specialized for a compact planetary
construction achieving the highest possible accuracy.",

abstract = "Around 1900, a group of sponge divers, pulled out from
an ancient Roman shipwreck, near the Antikythera
island, a piece of a hardly distinguishable geared
mechanism which is known since then as The Antikythera
mechanism. Until now the exact use of some of its
survived gears is investigated and there are
speculations about its missing parts. In 2005 two
revolutionary technical methods were applied on
Antikythera mechanism. The first is known as (3D) X-ray
computed tomography (CT) by X-Tek Systems Ltd, with the
use of which many hidden details under the corrosion,
came to light. The second is known as Polynomial
Texture Mapping (PTM) which was applied by HP Labs,
revealing engraved symbols and letters on Antikythera
mechanism surfaces. After all these years of research,
a more comprehensive picture of this machinery was
built, leading to the conclusion that it was used as a
multi functional astronomical calculator according to
Freeth et al. (2006b) with many impressive capabilities
such as: a prediction of upcoming Solar and Lunar
eclipses a calculator of the four astronomical cycles
(Metonic cycle, Callippic cycle, Saros cycle, Exeligmos
cycle) moon phases indication Sun and Moon position in
zodiac. The whole mechanical construction seemed
covered by a wooden case with a front and a back door
with engraved inscriptions on them. According to Freeth
et al. (2006b) The inscriptions support suggestions of
mechanical display of planetary positions proving the
existence of a missing planetary subsystem. In this
decrypted text, according to Freeth et al. (2006b),
astronomical terms have been recognized like stations
Image 1 like statio, conjunctions and according to Jones
(2017), there are references about the names of the
five known planets. Researchers are trying for years to
present planetary activity on their models suggesting
different solutions with a common characteristic. In
all models of planetary motion, the epicyclic theory is
applied. Although this theory is precise enough for
planets with negligible eccentricity, fails to
demonstrate the real recorded apparent orbit of planets
with significant eccentricity, like Mercury's which is
0.205. On the other hand in Antikythera mechanism
remains, there is an advanced device, known as the pin
& slot , which simulates the non-uniform motion of the
moon. According to Moussas (2009). The difference
between Kepler's predictions on the angular velocity of
the Moon during the month and the mechanism's
prediction is of the order 1/400 \ldots{}. So if the
constructor used a specialized gearing to model the
moon's orbit eccentricity which is 0.0549 why not do
the same for Mercury's case with an eccentricity of 3.7
times bigger? Many speculations about the Antikythera
mechanism's purpose have already been expressed, but
nevertheless, accuracy is its undeniable feature which
should be reflected in the mechanism's astronomical
indications. So, there's a question that might be
answered. Is it possible, the planets eccentricity can
be simulated using the pin & slot device? . This
research tries to find an answer and proposes a
feasible epicyclic gearing which can simulate the
geocentric apparent path of Mercury. The construction
is taking seriously the planet's eccentricity, trying
to minimize the discrepancy between expected and
indicated measurements. Our proposal is based on
theories known at the time Antikythera mechanism was
                 constructed.",

original reconstruction and use of the bow drill of the

implementation of the FRAMe Project, their use was
thoroughly studied, from which useful conclusions were

well as the details of the construction of the

with an unknown operation was a mystery since the
beginning of its discovery. The gear r1, which was
detected on the Fragment radiographies by C. Karakalos,
is preserved in excellent contdition, but this was not
enough to correlate it to the existing gear trainings
of the Mechanism. After the analysis of AMRP
tomographies of Fragment D and its mechanical
characteritics revealed that it could be a part of the
Draconic gearing. Although the Draconic cycle wa well

fourth Lunar cycle, it seems that it is missing from

supported by the bronze reconstruction of the Draconic
gearing by the authors. The adaptation of the Draconic

study of the chapter About Exeligmos in Introduction to
the Phenomena by Geminus. Geminus, refers that each
Exeligmos cycle began on very specific and rare dates,
when the Moon positioned at the points of the three
lunar cycles beginning: New moon at Apogee and at the
Node. The extremely large duration of the Annular Solar
eclipse occurred on December 22 178BC (Saros series
58), marks the start of the Prominent Saros Cycle
Apokatastasis. The next day, 23 December 178BC, the
Winter Solstice started. During these two neighboring
dates, the celebration of the religious festival of
Isia started in Egypt and the Hellenistic Greece. After
the analysis of the Mechanism's Parapegma events
specific position, 22/23 December 178BC is an ideal,
functional and representative initial date, in order to
calibrate the initial position of the Mechanism's
                 pointers.",

abstract = "The Antikythera Mechanism, now 82 small fragments of
corroded bronze, was an ancient Greek machine
simulating the cosmos as the Greeks understood it.
Reflecting the most recent researches, A Portable
Cosmos presents it as a gateway to Greek astronomy and
technology and their place in Greco-Roman society and
thought. From the Dead Sea Scrolls to the Terracotta
Army, ancient artifacts have long fascinated the modern
world. However, the importance of some discoveries is
not always immediately understood. This was the case in
1901 when sponge divers retrieved a lump of corroded
bronze from a shipwreck at the bottom of the
Mediterranean Sea near the Greek island of Antikythera.
Little did the divers know they had found the oldest
known analog computer in the world, an astonishing
device that once simulated the motions of the stars and
planets as they were understood by ancient Greek
astronomers. Its remains now consist of 82 fragments,
many of them containing gears and plates engraved with
Greek words, that scientists and scholars have pieced
back together through painstaking inspection and
deduction, aided by radiographic tools and surface
imaging. More than a century after its discovery, many
of the secrets locked in this mysterious device can now
be revealed. In addition to chronicling the unlikely
discovery of the Antikythera Mechanism, author
Alexander Jones takes readers through a discussion of
how the device worked, how and for what purpose it was
created, and why it was on a ship that wrecked off the
Greek coast around 60 BC. What the Mechanism has
uncovered about Greco-Roman astronomy and scientific
technology, and their place in Greek society, is truly
amazing. The mechanical know-how that it embodied was
more advanced than anything the Greeks were previously
thought capable of, but the most recent research has
revealed that its displays were designed so that an
educated layman could understand the behavior of
astronomical phenomena, and how intertwined they were
with one's natural and social environment. It was at
once a masterpiece of machinery as well as one of the
first portable teaching devices. Written by a
world-renowned expert on the Mechanism, A Portable
Cosmos will fascinate all readers interested in ancient
history, archaeology, and the history of science.",
