!PS:ARC-FOR-XXX.TXT.6, 22-Jan-90 14:33:01, Edit by BEEBE ARC for Other Operating Systems [22-Jan-1990] The ARC archive and compression utility developed by System Enhancement Associates, Inc. 21 New Street, Wayne NJ 07470 has been widely used in the PC DOS world, and also on the Internet for bundling files for FTP transfer. arc is (C)COPYRIGHT 1985,86 by System Enhancement Associates, Inc. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Arc can copy (usually with compression) one or more files from a single directory into an archive file, and vice versa; unlike UNIX tar, it is entirely ignorant of directory structure. The PC DOS ZOO utility developed by Rahul Dhesi is superior in this regard, and has been ported to UNIX and VAX VMS, but it is less widely used. Several public or shareware implementations of the ARC utility exist. On PC DOS, these include pkarc, pkpak, and pkzip, all by the same author, Phil Katz. The name evolution from arc to pak to zip was in response to legal action brought by System Enhancement Associates, Inc. in defense of its trademarks. You can find TOPS-20 implementations of ARC in the files PS:MARC.EXE PS:TARC.EXE PS:XARC7.EXE PS:ARC.HLP PS:ASCIFY.EXE These were done by Frank Wancho . Source code is available on request from ; it is also likely to be available somewhere in the Simtel20 archives. A VAX VMS implementation is available on ctrsci.math.utah.edu in SYS$LCLSYSROOT:[SYSEXE.UNIX]ARC.EXE I regret that source code is unavailable; I have no record either of where this version came from. A UNIX implementation of ARC is available on science.utah.edu in arc.tarz in the anonymous FTP login directory. On a UNIX system, unbundle with zcat
