abstract = "Linda Flower has published abundantly about what
(student) writers do and think as they write. Beverly
                 Zimmerman's awareness essay analytically and
systematically surveys this literature. Her goal is to
trace how Flower's original problem-solving treatment
evolved into a ``social cognitive model'' as Flower
sought to balance the personal and conceptual aspects
of writing with the increasingly popular view that
writing is a social process shaped by external,
cultural forces. Conclusion: ``...neither social nor
cognitive [writing] theory makes genuine sense without
                 the other.''",
